It’s been a long day…and you’re tired. People drove like idiots on the road, but you were having trouble concentrating, anyways. Finally you’re home, but you can’t get warm. You may be coming down with a cold — or worse yet, that nasty flu that’s been making inroads this winter. How can you go about fighting off the sniffles?
Tips For Fighting Off The Sniffles
This is your best line of defense for fighting off the sniffles. Get out of your sweaty clothes, and put on the warmest, most comfortable outfit you’ve got: sweatshirts, sweatpants, pajamas…and of course, heavy socks. (My husband, the Brick, adds long underwear and a robe to the mix.) If you’ve got a dryer, warm the clothes ten minutes or so before you put them on. If your partner, roommate or child is coming home from a long, tired day, do the same for them; putting on warm, comfortable clothes makes a big difference in your attitude.
Make a fire in the fireplace, or turn on the space heater. Drag your chair closer to the radiator, and add an afghan. (Frank McCourt, of Angela’s Ashes fame, would soak in a hot bath while wearing a knit hat, dry off, then read himself to sleep under an electric blanket.) Anything to get some extra warmth in your bones.
Crank Up The Nutrients
Anything with a high count of Vitamin C is going to do you good; orange juice naturally comes to mind, but other foods help, including chili peppers, red cabbage, turnip greens (!!!), pineapples and mangoes. (See an extended list here.) When feeling flu-ish, I’d often stop by a local Chinese restaurant and get their spiciest dish — and it helped. (Look for the word “Szechuan.”) Spicy Thai and Vietnamese entrees also do the trick, as well as green chili and other Mexican dishes.
There’s also echinacea (never helped me much, but many people like it), Emergen-C, Airborne and any number of herbal teas. Celestial Seasonings’ herbal teas are especially good, including their Sleepytime Tea — this one includes a balanced mix of get-well herbals.
Try A Hot Toddy
The Brick used to swear by a jigger of Southern Comfort, drunk slowly, and a game of darts. Nowadays, he prefers my version: Spoon a few tablespoons each of honey and lemon juice into a mug, then pour in an ounce or so of whiskey. (Rum works too, but adds a darker taste.) Fill with boiling water and stir. (Or microwave the whole shebang about a minute.) Drink slowly. For teetotallers, try hot lemonade or limeade, with an extra shot of honey stirred in.
Then, of course, there’s always chicken soup.
Read a good book, watch TV…or better yet, go to bed. It’s okay — the world can get by without you for a night.
