There’s no way to get around the everyday stresses of life…but there is a way to cope with them. Knitting and crochet have been a release from tension, as well as an excellent way to express creativity, for thousands of years.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to do these, either. What’s needed for knitting: two long sticks and a hank of yarn. (Or fabric strips, thread…or even string!) Two stitches form the basic foundation of the knitter’s repertoire: knit and purl. Once you’ve got those mastered (and it isn’t hard), they can be combined into all sorts of unusual stitch combinations, including seed stitch, cable…and even the stitches shown in the caps below. (Actually, the cap on the left is a basic stitch combo called stockinette.)
Crochet only takes one stick – but it needs a hook on one end to do the job. Crochet stitches begin with single and double crochet…even these simple stitches, combined, give caps a lovely texture.
“But I don’t know how to knit or crochet,” you say. That’s easily solved, thanks to yarn company websites. Lion Brand Yarn is by far the best, not only for free instructions, but a huge library of free patterns. (Yes, including sets like the ones above!) They also stock a wide variety of patterns and yarn for sale, as well.
Not only will you have learned a fascinating new pursuit — but you’ll be able to make beautiful accessories for yourself and your family. Maybe even a sweater or two! And you’ll find that the steady movement of yarn and needles is not only creative…but very comforting.
